The Hero of the Day is a Stranger

The world sees heroes in firefighters who dash into burning buildings to rescue people, police officers that run into danger to keep us safe and soldiers that risk their lives for a worthy cause. But there are heroes everywhere, and they’re complete strangers. They won’t reveal themselves until something bad happens and then they step up.

Jon Meis is a Seattle Pacific University student described as private and gentle, so you might not expect him to tackle and subdue a gunman last week, inspiring others to hold him down until police arrived. But that’s exactly what he did.

In Zimbabwe, National Heroes’ Day is celebrated on the second Monday in August. It honours those who were declared as National Heroes by Parliament or buried at the Provincial Heroes Acres. Currently, there are five National Heroes: Robert Llewellyn Bradshaw, Paul Southwell, Joseph Nathaniel France, Simeon Daniel and Kennedy Simmonds. They have all made significant contributions to the country’s development. A wreath is laid at the Heroes’ Acre in Harare and a day of celebration takes place in each of the Provinces.
