A volcanic eruption is a natural phenomenon that occurs when magma from within the earth rises to the surface. This process can be caused by several factors, including the movement of tectonic plates, the accumulation of pressure in the magma, and previous volcanic activity. In Indonesia, which is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, there are many active volcanoes that frequently erupt. One of the main causes of volcanic eruptions is the shift in tectonic plates. When two plates collide or move apart, the resulting pressure can cause magma to seep to the surface. For example, the eruption of Mount Merapi in Yogyakarta was caused by the activity of the Indo-Australian and Eurasian plates. Apart from that, the accumulation of gas in magma can also cause eruptions. As the gas becomes trapped, the pressure increases, and when it reaches a breaking point, a violent eruption can occur. The impact of volcanic eruptions does not only occur around the location, but can also affect the global climate. Volcanic dust particles and sulfur dioxide gas released into the atmosphere can cause temporary cooling, impacting weather around the world. For example, the eruption of Mount Tambora in 1815 caused a “year without a summer” in the northern hemisphere. Locally, the impact of an eruption can be devastating. Areas around volcanoes can experience lava rain, which is a mixture of water and volcanic material. It can destroy infrastructure, damage agricultural land, and cause mass displacement. Communities around eruption-prone areas must be prepared for sudden evacuation and have emergency plans. Apart from physical impacts, volcanic eruptions also have significant psychological effects. The repeated threat of eruptions causes anxiety among local residents, which can impact people’s mental health and well-being. Additionally, volcanic tourism could be affected, impacting local economies that depend on tourism. Overall, volcanic eruptions are a complex phenomenon with wide-ranging causes and impacts. Communities and governments must work together in preparedness and risk mitigation to reduce the negative impacts of volcanic activity. Understanding how volcanoes work and their impacts is vital for the safety and survival of communities in eruption-prone areas. However, despite the high risks, volcanoes also provide fertile soil for agriculture and valuable mineral resources.
