The League for Fair and Open Local Elections

While presidential and midterm elections dominate the headlines, airwaves and yard signs, it’s the local decisions that affect us most. Mayors, councillors, school board members, county commissioners, and other elected officials make choices about zoning laws, policing policies, library funding, and educational curricula – all decisions that can have profound effects on people’s lives. But they often do so with little public scrutiny due to low voter turnout and news deserts that fail to dedicate significant resources to covering them.

In addition to providing important services, these elected officials build trust and rapport with the community by listening to concerns and feedback. They also provide stability in times of crisis by addressing residents’ fears and advocating for their needs. Ultimately, voters seek candidates who are committed to ensuring their communities thrive. This commitment is reflected in active engagement with constituents, participation in community events, and volunteer initiatives. By demonstrating this dedication, elected officials can set themselves apart from other candidates and secure support at the polls.

The League has long supported fair elections in local government, both by litigating cases and by advocating in legislatures across the country to pass new laws protecting them. We believe that all voters deserve the right to participate in a democracy that is free from illegal gerrymandering, at-large election systems, and other forms of voter suppression.
